- We have copies of the proposed project and how we as blocks can work to clean up the community.
We discussed how we can attain some supplies, since the program is so similar to the Green Street’s Project in Folwell, we can use this program as a vehicle to get supplies and bags and achieve the goal of neighborhood clean up and also take down the needed information on housing violations etc to get to recorded and sent to the city. Robert then followed up with FNA, and got the following info:
- Folwell response [Clean and Green is an ongoing program with tee shirts and trash bags free for the asking (at least two weeks in advance for shirt selection) with a limit of 15 tee shirts per outing on a one time each year basis per block(s). Outcomes from the event are requested to document the program. We encourage reporting of violations, empty houses and other issues and concerns either in a special event format or on a daily basis for immediate attention. Rakes and gloves are also available just ask.]
A question was asked about what happened to the Clean Sweep program and if it could be re-implemented,
- Folwell response [No: it costs 96.00 per truck, per hour to pick up things that are already on the city list (lumber, furniture, appliances) and the response to a request for volunteers was so poor that the Board abandoned the strategy and has not chosen to reconsider, and it was just discussed at the April meeting. The cost for a 1-day event was close to $2000 before it was over and the funds are just not there anymore.]
Anissa Hollingshead reported on the upcoming Northside Home Tour,
Follow up: Rob & Jeanne stopped in Saturday Afternoon at North Regional Library, she had about 4 people stop by in the first few hours!!
We discussed the Minneapolis Advantage Program
It was mentioned that as the program is currently implemented it is not doing as much as it could do and is possibly displacing homeowners that are in the market to sell.
We followed up with the City on it 454 applications, as of 5-23.
• One foreclosed property appears to be in the works to be approved.
• Approx 40 are on file to be approved
• Will report more info later.
• It appears many homes were purchased on the Northside.
Deb Wagner, a realtor with Sandy Green Realty, presented the "(get to) NOMI" logo and marketing campaign concept. This will be a tool for realtors to use to promote homeownership in north Minneapolis. They are seeking funding to develop the marketing campaign.
The Duh! Research report of the week, from knowledgeplex.org
- A new report from the Urban Institute investigates the relationship between alcohol availability, type of alcohol establishment, distribution policies and violence and disorder at the block-group level in the District of Columbia. The study found that a high density of on-premise outlets (bars and restaurants) is a significant predictor of aggravated assault and that both on-premise and off-premise outlets when in high concentrations are associated with high levels of disorderly conduct. But only off-premise outlets have a positive relationship to domestic violence calls for services. The study is posted on the Urban Institute Web site.
